John was born and bred in Sydney were he played his junior football at Kensington with the Coogee Wombats.  John made his debut in Round 17 against the Brisbane Broncos.

Early on in his career, John primarily played lock or centre but over the past few years he has made the 6 jersey his own for the Rabbitohs.

In 2009 John was named the winner of the George Piggins medal as the Rabbitohs best and fairest player.

On the 5th October 2014, John captain the Rabbitohs in the Grand Final victory against the Bulldogs, where he played at second row.
